"What I stand for is what I stand on"- Wendell Berry

Hello friends! My name is Sofia Troya and, being a Southern Californian, there are two things that I’ve come to love dearly: the environment and surfing. When I learned that two things I loved were being threatened by the irresponsible way many large corporations use and produce their textiles, I knew I had to take action. That’s where hand crafting surfboard bags out of repurposed materials started. I believe that small faithful steps in the right direction can make a large, lasting impact. With this in mind, it is my hope that each bag I make and sell can be a small step towards a cleaner environment.

Our fabric is sourced from local thrift stores and online sustainable fabric companies. We buy second hand to repurpose denim, corduroy, curtains, and sheets and also support companies that responsibly fabricate their materials.

The decisions we make everyday determine the kind of life we pave for ourselves and we want to help you make one that counts. Supporting this company means choosing to live a life of peace of heart and mind, knowing you are purchasing a quality product made from sustainable materials.

Life is about balance. It’s important for our bags to be beautiful pieces of art that are also of high quality and purposeful design. The signature of each bag is the denim patchwork which is handcrafted in the center. Each bag is unique, just like your board and you.

Behind the logo...

In my eyes, living against the current of society is constantly changing its meaning as I am constantly changing and being transformed. I believe this brand goes against the current of the norm by straying away from fast fashion and creating a sustainable way to enjoy recycling. As you have probably noticed, I am extremely passionate about the environment and am a huge advocate for sustainability. Against the Current Designs is represented by a Christian fish that is connected to a wave going the opposite way. This is significant for the following reasons and can have a multitude of meanings to every person who looks at it. The wave is important because it represents a current of life and the direction society takes an individual. The Christian fish is going in the opposite direction than the wave to represent how those who live their lives counter culturally go “against the current” of society. This includes but is not limited to choosing to support sustainable and environmentally friendly material goods. By re-using materials to design and create artistic, unique surfboard bags, I hope to provide a way for surfers to have an individual style and protect their board without hurting the environment or people.

With faith, love and perseverance

Fast fashion, the cheap and unethical production and consumption of clothing, is hurting our environment and innocent people. Every year 7 to 14 million tons of textiles go into landfills. In 2013 a sweatshop in Bangladesh, producing name brand clothes, collapsed killing over 1,000 workers. Every responsible step we can take towards sustainability is a step in the right direction. We aim to do exactly that in the making and selling of these bags.
